Marie R. Hankinson
Adjunct Professor

Dr. Marie Hankinson is a graduate from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida with a PhD in Nursing Education. Marie is a native of central Pennsylvania where she earned her nursing diploma at Philipsburg State General Hospital. Marie has a Bachelor of Science in nursing from George Mason University and her Master of Science in nursing with a focus in emergency care from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She is currently working as a Residency Coordinator and oversees the western division EBP/Research program and Geriatric System Practice Council. Marie is the course lead for Nursing Theory in the graduate nursing program at Wilkes University Passan School of Nursing.

Marie’s nursing philosophy of “leading through education” has been influenced by Dr. Patricia Benner Novice to Expert- Nursing Theory. Marie believes that Benner’s practice theory of moving staff from novice to expert is instrumental in the development of nursing abilities and skills. Her main dissertation inquiry regarded how to produce centers of clinical excellence. Her dissertation study focused on bedside nurses and how they learn new knowledge to care for induced hypothermia patients. What she discovered was a deeper understanding of how the nurse educator and nurse leader role influence nursing practice.
